فَعِلَ Vocabulary: Meaning and Applied Forms
Read the bilingual lesson for فَعِلَ Vocabulary: Meaning and Applied Forms and test your understanding with a focused quiz.
Lesson
1. What Will We Learn?
By the end of this level, you will be able to: ● read 9 fully vocalized past-tense verbs on فَعِلَ. ● explain the natural meaning of each verb. ● distinguish the middle kasrah of فَعِلَ from the middle fatḥah of فَعَلَ. ● understand familiar changed forms and recover their basic verbs.
2. Focus on the Middle Vowel
فَعَلَ and فَعِلَ are not the same pattern In the basic form فَعَلَ, the middle root letter has fatḥah. In فَعِلَ, it has kasrah. Examples: جَعَلَ has middle fatḥah, while عَمِلَ has middle kasrah. Memory aid: The 3 groups below only organize meanings. They are not new grammar categories.
3. Group 1: Action, Praise, and Memory
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form عَمِلَ he acted / did عَمِلْنَا — we acted حَمِدَ he praised حَمِدَتْ — she praised حَفِظَ he memorized حَفِظُوا — the men memorized
4. Read the Verb and the Ending Together
عَمِلْنَا = عَمِلَ + ـْنَا The basic verb gives ‘acted’; the ending identifies ‘we.’ حَمِدَتْ = حَمِدَ + ـَتْ The ending identifies one female doer: ‘she praised.’ حَفِظُوا = حَفِظَ + ـُوا The ending identifies masculine plural third person: ‘the men memorized.’
5. Group 2: Laughter, Arrival, and Riding
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form ضَحِكَ he laughed ضَحِكْتُ — I laughed قَدِمَ he arrived قَدِمُوا — the men arrived رَكِبَ he rode رَكِبَتْ — she rode
6. Three Events, Three Different Meanings
ضَحِكَ: laughter It tells us that someone laughed. قَدِمَ: arrival It tells us that someone came or arrived. رَكِبَ: riding It tells us that someone mounted or rode. Arriving and riding may occur in one journey, but the verbs do not have the same meaning.
7. Group 3: Supposition, Testimony, and Acceptance
Basic verb Natural meaning Simple applied form حَسِبَ he supposed حَسِبْنَا — we supposed شَهِدَ he testified شَهِدُوا — the men testified قَبِلَ he accepted قَبِلْتُ — I accepted
8. Do Not Treat These as Synonyms
حَسِبَ expresses supposition or thinking something to be so. شَهِدَ expresses giving testimony or bearing witness. قَبِلَ expresses accepting something. The forms حَسِبْنَا, شَهِدُوا, and قَبِلْتُ keep these distinct basic meanings; their endings only identify the doer.
9. Three Useful Meaning Contrasts
Do not confuse First meaning Second meaning عَمِلَ / حَفِظَ doing or acting memorizing قَدِمَ / رَكِبَ coming or arriving riding حَسِبَ / شَهِدَ supposing testifying
10. Recover the Basic فَعِلَ Form
Applied form Ending Recovered basic verb عَمِلْنَا ـْنَا عَمِلَ حَمِدَتْ ـَتْ حَمِدَ قَدِمُوا ـُوا قَدِمَ قَبِلْتُ ـْتُ قَبِلَ
11. A New Learner's Checklist
