2. Calling Someone: Three Key Terms

Vocative address (نداء) means calling someone or something. The word used to call is a vocative particle (حرف نداء), and the person or thing called is the vocative noun (منادى). 3. The Three Forms in This Lesson

Choose the form according to the type of the vocative noun. 4. A Single Definite or Specifically Intended Noun

When the vocative noun is a single definite name or a specifically intended indefinite noun, remove tanwin if it is present. This form is called fixed on the nominative form (مبنی بر رفع). Base form What to notice زَيْدٌ، وَلَدٌ، نَائِمٌ tanwin is present before calling مَرْيَمُ، إِبْرَاهِيْمُ، مُوْسَى no tanwin is written in these forms

5. Calling a Particular Person

Add يَا and use the form taught here. Do not add tanwin after the vocative particle. 6. When the Noun Begins with الـ

7. Masculine Nouns with الـ

Use أَيَّتُهَا before a feminine definite noun with الـ. Keep any attached adjective with the noun. 9. When the Vocative Is an Iḍāfah

When the vocative noun is an iḍāfah, the first word is accusative. Keep the second part of the iḍāfah attached to it. Before calling Vocative form What changed عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ عَبْدُ → عَبْدَ أُخْتُ هَرُوْنَ يَا أُخْتَ هَرُوْنَ أُخْتُ → أُخْتَ رَبُّنَا يَا رَبَّنَا رَبُّ → رَبَّ رَبِّي يَا رَبِّي the written ending remains as shown

10. Choose the Correct Vocative Form

● حرف نداء is the calling word; منادى is the one being called. ● For a single definite or specifically intended noun, remove tanwin if present: يَا زَيْدُ. ● Before a masculine definite noun with الـ, use أَيُّهَا. ● Before a feminine definite noun with الـ, use أَيَّتُهَا. ● When the vocative is an iḍāfah, make its first word accusative: يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ.
