Lesson

1. Recall: Mudaf and Mudaf Ilayh

In an idafah, the first noun is the mudaf (مضاف) and the second is the mudaf ilayh (مضاف الیہ). In كِتَابُ زَيْدٍ, كِتَابُ is the mudaf and زَيْدٍ is the mudaf ilayh. This level asks whether the complete phrase is definite or indefinite.

2. The Basic Rule

When an indefinite noun is added to a definite noun, the mudaf becomes definite through the idafah. كِتَابٌ means “a book.” كِتَابُ زَيْدٍ means “Zayd’s book” - a specific book. The definiteness comes from the definite mudaf ilayh.

3. Five Definite Mudaf Ilayh Forms

The mudaf ilayh may be definite in several ways: - Proper name: كِتَابُ زَيْدٍ - Pronoun: كِتَابُهُ - Demonstrative: كِتَابُ هٰذَا - Relative construction: كِتَابُ الَّذِي نَصَرْتُهُ - Noun with ال: كِتَابُ الْوَلَدِ In each case, the mudaf points to a definite possessor or referent.

4. How to Recognize the Idafah

In the basic idafah taught here, the first noun takes neither tanwin nor ال, and the second noun is genitive. كِتَابُ الْوَلَدِ: كِتَابُ has no tanwin or ال; الْوَلَدِ is the genitive mudaf ilayh. These structural signs help you identify the relationship before deciding definiteness.

5. Important Limitation: Mudaf Ilayh May Be Indefinite

Do not assume that every idafah is definite. If the mudaf ilayh is indefinite, the phrase remains indefinite, although its meaning becomes more specific. كِتَابُ وَلَدٍ means “a boy’s book.” We know what kind of book is meant, but the boy is not identified. So the phrase gains specification (تخصیص), not definiteness.

6. Definiteness Versus Specification

Compare: كِتَابُ زَيْدٍ - definite, because زَيْدٍ identifies a particular person. كِتَابُ وَلَدٍ - indefinite but more specific than كِتَابٌ, because وَلَدٍ still means an unspecified boy. The form of the mudaf ilayh decides whether the phrase becomes definite or merely more specific.

7. Use the Phrase in a Sentence

كِتَابُ زَيْدٍ جَدِيدٌ - “Zayd’s book is new.” The definite idafah is the subject. كِتَابُ وَلَدٍ عَلَى الطَّاوِلَةِ - “A boy’s book is on the table.” The indefinite idafah is sufficiently specified to be used as the subject in this context. Both are idafah phrases, but they do not have the same definiteness.

8. Safe Decision Steps

1. Identify the mudaf and mudaf ilayh. 2. Check that the first noun has no tanwin and the second is genitive. 3. Decide whether the mudaf ilayh is definite or indefinite. 4. Definite mudaf ilayh makes the phrase definite. 5. Indefinite mudaf ilayh gives specification but leaves the phrase indefinite.
